Cairns 30.3.09- 2.4.09
As already mentioned previously I split from the rest of the group once we got to Cairns, as this was essential to achieve my objective of furthering my English vocabulary in order to be capable to study abroad. This was a hard step though as Jane and I had somehow grown an almost inseparable unity.
I winded up in a hostel called ‘Shenanigans’ und unless you are a total weirdo it was unavoidable to meet plenty of nice folks. During the next days I discovered a job advert, which invited “keen, enthusiastic workers to enjoy bush tracking, fishing and wildlife along with paid work and accommodation”. Hence I decided to take a plunge regardless of having to leave Cairns behind which I had just started to become fond of. Apart from being rather small and laid-back, Cairns also appealed to me with its tropical flair. In the middle of the city you’d bump into humongous trees with vines hanging down and screechy bats filling the branches. On the edge of the city, you’d see the boardwalk with palm trees lining it, skater ramps and an artificial lagoon, which was a substitute for the muddy ocean, in which you mustn’t swim due to the fatal jellyfish.
Outside Cairns in the outer suburbs, you’d find yourself cruising windy roads with kettle on either side grazing on lust green paddocks. If there weren’t banana plantations and palm trees you’d genuinely believe that you were driving through the Bavarian countryside.
